Bridging the Gap Between Current Learning Priorities and Future Aspirations for All Children

Actualizing one’s future aspirations entails becoming a goal-directed, self-driven, future-focused learner who has mastered learning how to learn. The underlying skill that supports and promotes such independence is well-developed Executive Function, which ranges from mental capacity to sustain attention, organize materials, prioritize actions, approach learning flexibly, problem solve, and think about the big-picture in and outside of school. However, far too often current learning priorities keep students focused on daily work and grades creating a disconnect between habit mastery and long-term self-management. And without direct or explicit emphasis on instructions that promote the development of Executive Function, students leave high school without the necessary self-awareness to strategize for learning and life.
In this workshop, Sucheta Kamath will discuss ways to align teaching and learning that fosters Executive Function in order to prepare self-driven students who know how to plan their work, manage their time, adapt during uncertainty, handle their emotions, and know when and how to ask for help. Since research-based pedagogy and programs designed for students with diverse learning needs are proven to be effective for all students without formal struggles, an Executive Function learning approach can and does enrich the learning experience for the entire learning community.

Using Technology to Enhance Structured Literacy Instruction
Presented by Sharon Plante, Chief Technology Integrator at The Southport School
The utilization of technology (Interactive screens, iPads, apps, and websites) can make Structured Literacy instruction (decoding/encoding, fluency, and comprehension) a multi-sensory process that is engaging and explicit while maintaining the individualization and diagnostic-prescriptive aspects of the lesson. It can support the organizational challenges for necessary lesson materials that can occur when working with multiple students at once, while also allowing for ease of differentiation within a small group format. Additionally, educational technology can provide ways for the teacher to collect work samples and data from multiple students simultaneously and allow for individualized feedback. The session will focus on the use of various tools that can support differentiated and individualized engagement during small group multi-sensory Structured Literacy instruction.

Multisensory Math: What Intervention Should Look Like
Presented by Marilyn Zecher
This presentation endeavors to offer some unique ideas and a possible path forward for changing the way we address the gaps and misconceptions that prevent students with disabilities from succeeding in mathematics. By approaching math through a vertical lens and employing a conceptual rather than a procedural approach to math, we can utilize evidence-based strategies and differentiation to support our unique learners. We will focus on the “Big Ideas” of math as we employ best practices, along with hands-on instruction and differentiation to meet the needs of students who struggle. Strategies for teaching foundation skills and weaving them through middle grade content and secondary math instruction will be demonstrated. Ideas and strategies for designing intervention activities and models for addressing student needs in a diagnostic prescriptive manner will be included.

Sharon Plante, an educator with over 25 years teaching experience in special education, currently serves Chief Technology Integrator at The Southport School. As a Classroom Educator certified Orton-Gillingham tutor, she uses her training and understanding of technology to empower students with learning disabilities in the classroom and through virtual learning. Sharon has taken the work done at The Southport School and conducts presentations and workshops across the country and online providing other educators this training, incorporating best practices in professional development. She has provided workshops for Kent Independent School District (Michigan), Pennsylvania Department of Education, and the Assistive Technology International Association. Additionally, she has led virtual training for Learning Ally, Spotlight on Dyslexia, PaTTAN and the Center for Technology and Disabilities, while also presenting at the International Dyslexia Association and The Dyslexia Foundation. Sharon is the co-author of Utilizing Technology to Engage Students with Learning Disabilities. Sharon was awarded the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from George Mason University College of Education and Human Development.
Elizabeth C. Hamblet has worked as a learning specialist in disability services offices at the college level for nearly 20 years after starting her career in the field as a high school special education teacher and case manager. Having recognized the information gap that left professionals and parents unaware of how to prepare students for success at college, she created programs to educate professionals and families about how to help students make a smooth transition to postsecondary education. Hamblet makes presentations locally and at national conferences to educate professionals, parents, and students about the changes students will find at college and how to best prepare them for success there. In addition to her book, she has published numerous articles on this topic in a variety of journals and platforms, including Understood.org, where she is a college expert. Hamblet also continues to do what she loves most – working with students as a part-time learning specialist/consultant at a university’s disability services office. A nationally certified Academic Language Therapist and former public-school classroom/demonstration teacher, Ms. Zecher is a specialist in applying multisensory strategies to a variety of content areas. Her graduate level Multisensory Math courses have been used as methods courses at the university level and she is a frequent speaker at national, international, and local conferences. Ms. Zecher specializes in evidence-based methods and interventions for all students but which are especially effective with students who have learning challenges. She is well known for her work in the fields of mathematics, literacy strategies for older learners and study skills. Her presentations and professional development for teachers incorporates general multisensory instructional strategies, Orton-Gillingham strategies, the principles of UDL, and recommendations from the NCTM, The What Works Clearinghouse and the Common Core State Standards.
