Structured Literacy for Middle and High School Webinar

October 1, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

IDA Austin Webinar: Explicit Literacy Instruction for Struggling Middle and High School Students

About:

According to the 2019 NAEP Report Card, 33% of 8th graders in Texas scored below basic in reading skills. How can we re-think explicit literacy instruction to address middle and high school students still struggling with word level reading and spelling? For the older student, this instruction needs to be balanced with lessons in vocabulary and comprehension. Techniques to be discussed include teaching basic skills within syllable types, exploring morphemes for enhanced spelling and vocabulary development, and tying skills to content area for student buy-in. Many ideas for relevant activities will be included.
