Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Volunteer Advocacy Project

Training Program for individuals who are willing to become advocates for families navigating the special education process.
The purpose of this project is to train volunteer advocates to provide instrumental and effective support to parents of children with disabilities. In this training, participants will learn more about special education law and advocacy strategies. Following graduation from the program, you will be expected to work with at least four families.

This is a comprehensive 12-week training to be held in the fall starting Monday, August 17th. The specific dates are:
August 17, 24, 31
Sept 7, 14, 21, 28
Oct 5, 12, 19, 26
Nov 2

The training is held on Monday mornings for 3 hours beginning at 9:00 am (CST) and ending at 12:00pm (CST) and, in Eastern Tennessee, the training begins at 10:00 am (EST) and ends at 1:00pm (EST).

The training will include a binder of materials including passages from: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Additionally, the participants will be given copies of each training session’s PowerPoints along with relevant materials. For each training session, the participant will be expected to read pertinent materials. Due to COVID, the training will be held completely remote this year via Zoom.
