Webinar: Building Trusting Relationships to EmPOWER Learners: Words Matter

This is the 2nd in our FLEXIBLE MINSETS series, Creating Safety for Children to Ask Questions, Make Mistakes & Take Risks for Learning.
This webinar explores how our actions and words can be fine-tuned to enhance safety for taking learning-related risks. To work towards self-directed learning, we all need a degree of control and a sense of agency. We start with the implications of power differentials and consider steps that can increase partner-centered learning to empower students. We then focus on language as one of the most powerful ways to build trust and model resilient responses to challenges.
Psychologist Dr. Julie Dunstan has worked for more than 3 decades in both early childhood and learning-related settings. She has conducted public policy research on child development, family needs, addictions, learning differences and general education. She has served on numerous professional bodies, advisory boards and governmental commissions.
Our speaker is developmental psychologist, Dr. Julie Dunstan. Julie has taught undergraduate courses in psychology, and lectured at the graduate level in psychology, education and organizational development. She has presented at international conferences including the AOGPE, AEA, IARLD and the Learning Differences conference. Julie recently co-authored a chapter for, and assisted with the editing of, Dr. Lynn Meltzer’s book Executive Function in Education (2018).
Julie has driven the development of innovative programs including the ICAN Programme for children with math-related difficulties and the I-PLAY Programme which promotes phonological skills in preschool. Most recently, she retired as The Reading Clinic’s Executive Director to spearhead reFLEXionsTM, an initiative designed to develop Flexible Mindsets: the journey of self-directed learning. The reFLEXionsTM team is conducting longitudinal research on emerging executive function processes. Julie believes all learners can develop a sense of competence and be adaptive in responding to a complex and ever-changing world.
