Webinar: Continuum of Decoding Strategies: Explicit- Systematic – Cumulative

April 28, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

This webinar, “Continuum of Decoding Strategies: Explicit — Systematic — Cumulative” is a necessary stop on the road to accurate word recognition and fluent text reading. Use of systematic decoding strategies is a reliable path to accurate identification of the vast variety of English words — simplest to most complex. While the alphabetic principle is a foundation of English orthography, learning to read and write is a process of increasing awareness and integration of phonology, orthography, AND morphology. Phonemic proficiency and grapheme-phoneme proficiency—in addition to guided practice with use of explicit systematic CUMULATIVE decoding strategies for word identification—are prerequisites for word recognition. Efficient orthographic mapping is the final phase of word-level reading development. Readers do not remember words via visual memory! Students can use the considerable benefits of these systems of language structure only when they are aware of the components and understand their interrelationships—including morphophonemics.
This session provides modeling and guided practice of a continuum of explicit systematic cumulative decoding strategies—from simple to complex.

The speaker, NANCY CUSHEN WHITE, Ed.D. is a Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, at UCSF—and a member of the UCSF Dyslexia Research Center Team. She works as a certified structured literacy dyslexia specialist (IDA-CERI), certified academic language therapist and board certified educational therapist (AET), certified instructor of teaching (Slingerland Institute), and dyslexia consultant in her private practice, Dyslexia Evaluation & Remediation Clinic. Among her many teaching assignments, she piloted a San Francisco Unified School District special day class for 2e (twice exceptional) students who were gifted with a dx of dyslexia. She trains teachers, publishes, and works on numerous board, including the No. CA Branch of IDA and the CA State Literacy Team.
