WEBINAR: IMPROVING SPELLING TO MAKE WRITING AND READING GAINS
Spelling is often left to memorization. A student may pass the weekly test, but then not be able to spell or even read those same words just days or weeks later. If students were taught the underlying structure of English spellings, they would be able to understand English words better to help improve decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). In this webinar participants will get an overview of how English words do have logical spellings and how teaching spelling through morphology and phonology can help students with their literacy skills. Participants will be introduced to instructional strategies based on the STRUCTURED WORD INQUIRY approach to help teach spelling in a structured, explicit/logical, multisensory approach to assist all students in their classroom, small group, or individual tutoring lessons.
KELLI SANDMAN-HURLEY, Ed.ED
Kelli is an author and co-founder of the Dyslexia Training Institute. Dr. Kelli is a certified special education advocate assisting parents and children through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 Plan process. Dr. Kelli has studied Structured Word Inquiry, the Orton-Gillingham approach, Lindamood-Bell, RAVE-O and Read Naturally. She is a Past-President of the San Diego Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and is currently a writer-at-large for IDA. She consults with schools, trains teachers, and co-created “Dyslexia for a Day: A Simulation of Dyslexia.”
Tracy is the co-founder of the Dyslexia Training Institute. She provides remediation for children and adults with dyslexia and is a certified Special Ed advocate. She is a past President of the San Diego Branch of the IDA and is trained in Structured Word Inquiry, the Orton-Gillingham approach, Lindamood-Bell programs, Read Naturally and more. She co-created and produced, “Dyslexia for a Day: A Simulation of Dyslexia.” Tracy is also a parent of a child with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD and Exec. Function Disorder.
