STRUCTURED LITERACY: IT’S MUCH MORE THAN JUST PHONICS

Decades of research have revealed that learning to read does not come naturally. Therefore teaching reading must be done intentionally and purposefully based on what we know to be true. Only 5 percent of the population will learn to read effortlessly. On the other hand, 60 percent of the population needs the explicit, systematic instruction that Structured Literacy provides. Furthermore, of that 60 percent, 10-15 percent who have an identified reading disability will need this instruction with even more repetition. Even the 40% of students who learn to read relatively easily can later fall victim to what the education world refers to as the 3rd grade wall or the 4th grade slump, so they too can benefit from this approach. It is clear that structured literacy is our best chance at reaching all readers and helping all students grow into successful and independent readers. Our speakers:

Rachel Solis is Manager of Educational Partnerships for Center for the Collaborative Classroom. She possesses a Master in Education and completed National Board studies in the area of Literacy with Certification in Reading-Language Arts in Early-Middle Childhood. With over 20 years in education and a strong literacy background, she strives to make schools a kinder, safer place where ALL children feel successful and become independent learners! Rachel facilitates professional learning with educators across Southern California in the areas of reading and writing development, intervention, and social-emotional learning. She’s dedicated to disrupting and dismantling old practices and re-building equitable practices where ALL students are successful.

Dale Webster is CORE’s Chief Academic Officer. He leads the Educational Services division and is responsible for the day-to-day operations, training, and quality control of CORE’s educational consulting and management staff. Dale brings 30 years of experience in teaching, professional development/technical assistance, research, state-level policy work and administration, and curriculum development to schools and districts across the country and has presented at national conferences.  Dale earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and a California Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from San Diego State University, a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Houston, and a Ph.D. in Education at the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on vocabulary development for English learners. Dale has served on the California Curriculum Commission, an advisory body to the California State Board of Education on curriculum frameworks and textbook adoptions, as well as numerous other state and local educational panels. Dale is also treasurer of Interactions for Peace, a nonprofit organization that teaches peaceful problem-solving skills to youth, and he is a former board member of the San Diego branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
