SUMMARY:DDIG – “How Does the Brain Learn to Read and Why Do Some Children Struggle”
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jason Yeatman is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Stanford University. In this talk he will first lay out the neurobiological underpinnings of literacy and ask the question: “Why do some children struggle learning to read?” Then\, Dr. Yeatman will present data showing how intensive reading intervention programs can reshape development of the brain’s reading circuitry. Finally\, he will conclude by introducing a new\, open-access\, online assessment platform – The Rapid Online Assessment of Reading (ROAR; https://roar.stanford.edu/ ) – that Stanford is developing to lower the barriers to assessment.\n\n\n\nRegister to attend the February 13 DDIG \nCEU ticket fee $10\nGeneral Admission – free

SUMMARY:Community Chat with Faith Borkowsky!
DESCRIPTION:“Can You See Me?” Literacy Discussions Workbook: Raising Awareness and Action Plan\nOur schools have been given more than enough time to figure out how to truly teach children to read. Government grants and initiatives have not made a dent in the literacy crisis\, especially in Black and Latino communities. In a recent study\, only about 18% of African American fourth-graders were proficient in reading. And yet\, my experience is that the problem persists in even the most sought-after school districts. This is because the Balanced Literacy framework that is so entrenched is a failure. We all must have a sense of urgency and not stay silent. This problem will NOT go away with time. \nConsequently\, the drivers of change today are not educators but knowledgeable parents who recognize and understand faulty practices and have been questioning basic assumptions about literacy. Parents are not concerned with ideology or philosophy; they just want their kids to learn to read and write. \nJoin us for this one-hour chat as we discuss how to build a team that prioritizes the child and not adult interests. \nRegister Today! \nFaith Borkowsky is the founder of High Five Literacy and is a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner with thirty-five years of experience in literacy instruction – as a classroom teacher\, reading and learning specialist\, regional literacy coach\, administrator\, and tutor.  Ms. Borkowsky provides professional development for teachers and school districts\, as well as parent workshops\, presentations\, and private consultations on science-based literacy practices.  She is the author of the award-winning book\, Failing Students or Failing Schools? A Parent’s Guide to Reading Instruction and Intervention\, and the “If Only I Would Have Known…” series of books\, conceived as a roadmap for literacy readiness and success for parents of young children.  In 2021\, Ms. Borkowsky was a finalist for the World Literacy Foundation award for her significant contributions to literacy. \nCommunity Chats are designed for families\, but all are welcome!\nIDA Arizona Moderator: Anne Iniguez

SUMMARY:The Science of Reading Comprehension (#2 Spotlight Structured Literacy Series) – Presenter Sharon Vaughn
DESCRIPTION:Registration: https://spotlight2023Feb8.eventbrite.com \nThe International Dyslexia Association Georgia and The Reading League Georgia have partnered to bring you the 2023 Spotlight on Structured Literacy Webinar Series\, which includes four live webinars: Jan. 18\, Feb. 8\, Mar. 1\, Mar. 29. The webinars are FREE and OPEN to all. Certificates of Attendance will be available for registrants who complete a post-webinar knowledge check/survey form within the deadline after each event.  \nDESCRIPTION – Wednesday\, February 8\, 2023 (#2 in the Series)\nThe Science of Reading Comprehension\n \nThe Science of Reading (SOR) has had a significant influence on the public’s knowledge about current reading practices and the changes required to institutionalize change in implementing the SOR in our schools. Much of the SOR has focused on the foundation skills such as phonemic awareness\, phonics\, and other word reading practices. This is necessary because the challenges of learning to read are largely remedied through improving these foundation skills and using SOR to do so. However\, there are other critical instructional practices that are necessary to enhance reading outcomes for students with dyslexia including text based reading strategies that support building background knowledge and comprehension\, vocabulary enhancement\, and fluency.  This presentation will provide a knowledge base from the research on several elements of improving reading outcomes for students with dyslexia. \n Dr. Sharon Vaughn (Professor\, The University of Texas) is the Manuel J. Justiz Endowed Chair in Education and the Executive Director of The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk\, an organized research unit that she founded with a “make a wish” gift from the Meadows Foundation family. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the first woman in the history of The University of Texas to receive the Distinguished Faculty and Research Award\, the CEC research award\, the AERA SIG distinguished researcher award\, and the Jeannette E. Fleischner Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of LD from CEC. She is the author of more than 40 books and 350 research articles. Several of these research articles have won awards: one\, the A.J. Harris International Literacy Association award for best article published and\, another\, the School Psychology award for best article. She is currently Principal Investigator on several Institute for Education Sciences\, National Institute for Child Health and Human Development\, and U.S. Department of Education research grants. She works as a senior adviser to the National Center on Intensive Interventions and has more than six articles that have met the What Works Clearing House Criteria for their intervention reports. She has conducted technical assistance in literacy to more than 10 countries and 30 State Departments of Education and has worked as a literacy consultant to more than 50 technical assistance projects.

SUMMARY:Community Conversations: How Marietta City Schools Supports Students with Characteristics of Dyslexia
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, Jan. 17\, from 12-12:30 p.m.\, Dr. Rivera and Dr. Jennifer Hernandez\, Executive Director of the Office of Academic Achievement\, will give an overview of how MCS supports students with characteristics of dyslexia\, including the district’s participation in the Georgia Department of Education’s pilot dyslexia program. The conversation will also discuss how staff are trained in dyslexia resources and science of reading. \n“Learning to read and write is one of life’s most fundamental achievements. A student’s success in literacy development paves the way for future success\,” said Superintendent Dr. Grant Rivera\, “Marietta is committed to identifying students that need extra support as early as possible so we can provide additional instruction and focused intervention.” \nMCS is one of seven school districts in Georgia currently in the pilot program designed to help identify and support students with dyslexia. The pilot program is part of the upcoming implementation of Senate Bill 48\, which will require all Georgia elementary schools to screen every kindergartener for dyslexia. \nThis “Community Conversations” event will be virtual to make it convenient for people to join wherever they are. The virtual town hall will also be recorded so people who can’t make it can still access this valuable information. \nThe February “Community Conversations” will offer an overview of Marietta Athletics\, including opportunities for students in K-12\, summer camps\, try-out information\, and upcoming facility improvements. \nWHAT: “Community Conversations” virtual town hall\, Dyslexia resources\nWHEN: Tuesday\, January 17\, 12-12:30 p.m.\nWHERE: https://zoom.us/j/97972140695
