SUMMARY:Video by zoom: Creative Brains: A Symbiosis for Success
DESCRIPTION:This is a fantastic video. \nLiteracy is a natural and easy process for some\, but for many with dyslexia\, reading and writing are formidable and\, seemingly\, impossible to master. \nThis documentary displays the personal recollections and insights of ten accomplished people with dyslexia and what seemed to be a serious impairment that led to the development of their own special talents. Each weaves a story with memories of difficult moments of failure that eventually evolved into a life of success and of the transition from focusing on weaknesses to becoming aware of strengths. \nThese are inspiring tales of courage\, painting eloquent word pictures of how using one’s own creativity and talents can overcome what seems to be a certain road to defeat.  It is a presentation that inspires and motivates us all\, particularly those of us with dyslexia. \nFor June 2nd – link to https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIpd-yprTosHdc83_SS7N0zI_hK_Ml6YbCX.  \nFor June 4th – link to https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0pcemgpj8tHNWb8T7NmsQFy6LYGzcffijQ\n \nRegister in advance for these meetings.  After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Building Confident Writers
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we will identify techniques that improve students’ confidence in their ability to write organized and well developed essays\, and to do so fluently. Dr. Davis-Perkins will discuss how to give students 1) a reason to write – one they value\, 2) proof of their own neuro-linguistic strengths and ways to tap these skills to write fluently and effectively\, 3) a system that reduces the cognitive load and eases the writing process\, as well as 4) a way to ‘hear’ their words as the reader does and thus\, evaluate the effectiveness of their own written expression. Improved confidence and effective essay writing were just two of the positive outcomes when these research based techniques were implemented in a pilot study conducted with high school students in Barstow\, California. \nOur Speaker: Maria Davis-Perkins\, PhD.\, M.A.\, Sp-CCC\nDr. Maria Davis-Perkins has published and presented on topics that have included: student engagement; tapping neuro-linguistic skills to ease the writing process and build student confidence; the language of effective teaching; and selecting literature appropriate to developmental age. Her professional experiences include: co-creator of the Talk/Write (Using Talk to Write) workshops and pilot; educational consultant to high school staff; speech-language specialist in schools as well as hospitals; co-creator of the Kaiser cognitive-computer lab; speech-language pathologist – private sector; high school English teacher; and Speech/Debate coach. Her research interests include: academic literacy and language skills; reading and writing development; as well as research methods appropriate to assessing intervention effectiveness.

DESCRIPTION:Framing Your Thoughts – Sentence Structure \nThe goal is to develop active\, thoughtful\, purposeful writers. \nThe Project Read® Written Expression curriculum teaches the fundamentals of sentence writing and paragraph development. The Framing Your Thoughts® curriculum uses unique graphic symbols to represent the function of sentence parts which promote sentence understanding\, editing and creative independence. The instructional strategies blend creative freedom and accuracy with direct multisensory skill instruction. \nFRAMING YOUR THOUGHTS® Sentence Structure is a sequential and systematic method of instruction that teaches sentence structure from simple to complex. Using graphic symbols to represent the sentence parts and how they function\, students learn to construct compound complex sentences with accuracy and creativity. The 2018 Edition of Sentence Structure has been enriched with an updated lesson design and parts of speech linked to word function. \nFor more information and to register\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Introduction: How Do Fixed Mentalities Close the Window on Learning?
DESCRIPTION:This series\, Creating Safety for Children to Ask Questions\, Make Mistakes & Take Risks for Learning\, involves Flexible Mindsets. The first webinar introduces the Flexible Mindsets model and the mechanism for transforming mindsets\, “Productive Puzzling”. We briefly review the impact of stress on the brain and the impact of fixed mentalities. We end with simple steps to get started in creating safety for taking learning risks.\n**Are you feeling forced to juggle and adjust priorities\, think on your feet and dig deep within yourself?\n**Do you worry that your students or children may not be reaching their learning goals?\nNow\, more than ever before\, Flexible Mindsets are vital for responding to rapidly-changing priorities and day-to-day uncertainties with resilience and adaptability. Navigation of today’s abundant challenges and opportunities hinges upon the capacities of Critical Thinking\, Complex Problem-Solving and Creativity: what we call the 3C’s.\nFlexible Mindsets walks you through the framework and concrete steps needed to propel students towards the ever-evolving aspirations of self-directed learning.\nIn this series of webinars\, we focus on the implication of fixed mentalities and how to create emotional safety to transform beliefs from fixed to flexible. Join us and seize this opportunity to lay the foundation for Flexible Mindsets: the journey of self-directed learning. \nOur presenter is C. Julie Dunstan\, M.A.\, Ph.D.\, Developmental Psychologist.\nJulie has driven the development of innovative programs including the ICAN Programme for children with math-related difficulties and the I-PLAY Programme which promotes phonological skills in preschool. Most recently\, she retired as The Reading Clinic’s Executive Director to spearhead reFLEXionsTM\, an initiative designed to develop Flexible Mindsets: the journey of self-directed learning. \nRegister here for this webinar. \nWe are able to offer these webinars free due to the generosity of a donor.  However\, we would greatly appreciate additional donations to help us maintain our mission of sharing solid information about dyslexia and related learning issues with parents and teachers. \n DONATE HERE
