SUMMARY:The Writing Revolution…with Drs. Vroom & Zoleo (#3 in Spotlight Series)
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://Spotlight2023March1.eventbrite.com \nDESCRIPTION – Wednesday\, March 1\, 2023 (#3 in the Series) \nFew activities are as cognitively demanding as writing. In this session\, Drs. Vroom and Zoleo provide an overview of the Hochman Method\, an explicit set of specific writing strategies that teachers use in every grade and in all subjects\, including ELA\, social studies\, science\, world languages\, and math. This evidence-based and proven instructional methodology enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers. Those skills equip students to become better readers\, to communicate more effectively in writing and speaking\, and most importantly\, to elevate their thinking. The Hochman Method will be discussed in relation to the challenges of writing: the cognitive demands of writing\, the interplay of writing with reading comprehension and knowledge\, the scaffolding of writing instruction\, and the importance of planning and revising. Participants will learn key strategies that can be implemented immediately with students in writing or through oral practice. \nDr. Vroom and Dr. Zoleo are the co-executive directors of The Writing Revolution (TWR). TWR is a national nonprofit that trains educators and supports schools and districts in implementing the Hochman Method\, an evidence-based method of writing instruction that transforms the way students write\, learn\, read\, think\, and express themselves. Dr. Vroom was previously a lead social studies teacher and school-wide writing coordinator at New Dorp High School. Dr. Zoleo was previously the assistant principal at New Dorp\, where she co-led the effort to bring the Hochman Method of writing instruction to the school. Both Drs. Vroom and Zoleo have been with TWR since its founding in 2014. Today\, TWR trains thousands of teachers each year and partners with schools and districts across the United States. Drs. Vroom and Zoleo have developed content for TWR\, as well as for textbooks and curriculum guides\, and presented at the Aspen Institute\, South by Southwest\, and the College Board Foundation\, as well as many other venues\, on the topic of writing. Both Drs. Vroom and Zoleo earned doctoral degrees in student literacy from St. John’s University. \nArticle from EdWeek January 17\, 2023: \nHow Does Writing Fit Into the Science of Reading?\nhttps://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/how-does-writing-fit-into-the-science-of-reading/2023/01?utm_source=eb&utm_medium=eml&utm_campaign=SR&utm_content=20230118&M=6004130&UUID=bf84159b12a27cbaa26481436779541e \nOur presenters were mentioned in this January 4\, 2023 Forbes Magazine article authored by Natalie Wexler\, Senior Contributor for Forbes Magazine: \nTo Improve Students’ Writing\, Teach Them To Construct Sentences And Outline Paragraphs\nhttps://www.forbes.com/sites/nataliewexler/2023/01/04/to-improve-students-writing-teach-them-to-construct-sentences-and-outline-paragraphs/?sh=2d4823207e70 \nYoung Writers Need Structure to Learn the Craft. Archer\, Ph.D. \nEducational Consultant and\nAuthor of Explicit Instruction: Effective and Efficient Teaching\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Magic is in the Instruction\n \n\n\nTo optimize our implementation of the Science of Reading to ensure that all students read accurately and fluently with good comprehension\, we must draw from the Science of Instruction.  In this session\, Dr. Archer will discuss the critical variables in instruction: clear lesson purposes\, structured lessons including demonstration\, guided practice and checking for understanding\, embedded formative assessment\, active participation\, effective feedback\, and judicious practice.  When these elements are consistently and effectively used\, learning results. \n\nDr. Anita Archer serves as an educational consultant to state departments and school districts on explicit instruction and literacy. She has presented in all 50 states and many countries including Australia and is the recipient of ten awards honoring her contributions to education. Dr. Archer has served on the faculties of the University of Washington\, University of Oregon\, and San Diego State University. She has co-authored curriculum materials including Phonics for Reading (Curriculum Associates)\, a three-level intervention program\, REWARDS (Voyager/Sopris)\, a five-component literacy intervention program\, and a best-selling textbook titled Explicit Instruction: Effective and Efficient Teaching (Guilford Publications).    \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMelissa Farrall\, Ph.D.\, SAIF \nDirector of Evaluations\, Professional Learning Provider\nStern Center for Language and Learning\n \n\n\nSo Many Tests\, So Little Time \n\nAre you overwhelmed when the discussion turns to assessment? Are you drowning in data? Do you ever feel that your evaluator is speaking a foreign language?  Do you wish that you could participate at team meetings with greater confidence? Do you wish that you could contribute more? \n\n\n\nIn this session we will look at tools for progress monitoring\, criterion-referenced tests\, and standardized norm-referenced tests and how each type of assessment contributes to our knowledge of students. We will talk about how tests  are developed\, and why we should care about reliability and validity. We will discuss the bell curve and how to “eyeball” test scores. \nWhat we will learn:\n\nWhat progress monitoring probes\, criterion-referenced tests and norm-referenced tests have to offer;\nWhat reliability and validity mean for your student;\nHow to work with different types of test scoring systems; and\nHow to draw meaningful conclusions about student performance.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa Farrall is the author of Reading Assessment: Linking Language\, Literacy\, and Cognition\, and the co-author of All About Tests & Assessments published by Wrightslaw. Melissa Farrall presently works as the Director for Evaluation at the Stern Center for Language and Learning in Williston\, Vermont where she trains evaluators and teaches courses on the assessment of reading\, writing\, and language. Melissa also holds an appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at the Robert Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont where she trains medical professionals about learning disabilities and reading. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \n\nMorning and Afternoon Breakout Sessions:\n\n\n\n\n\n2 breakout sessions (morning and afternoon).\nEach attendee is required to choose breakout session on the registration page.\nEach session size is limited.\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: Anita Archer has a different topic for the morning and afternoon sessions  \n\n \n \nMelissa Farrall\, Ph.D.\, SAIF\n \n\nComprehensive Reading Evaluations: Beyond the Numbers \n\n \n\n Do evaluation reports leave you cold? Are you tired of literacy test results that fail to provide helpful information about student performance? Would you rather have a tooth pulled than attend another evaluation team meeting? If the answer is yes\, this session is for you. In this session\, we will look at comprehensive reading evaluations. We will review some of the more commonly used tests: the good\, the bad\, and the ugly.  We will learn how to  think critically about the data obtained\,  and how we can use this information to  improve our instructional recommendations.   \nWhat we will learn: \n\nWhat different reading tests measure and what they neglect\nWhat kinds of data we can obtain from different tests\nHow we can link assessment data to instructional recommendations\n\n\n\n\n \nAnita L. Archer\, Ph.D.\n\n(morning session:) Providing Reading Interventions for Students in Grades 4-9: Review of the Educator’s Practice Guide released in 2022 by the Institute of Education Sciences \n\n\n \nDo you have intermediate and secondary students that are still not reading accurately and fluently with good comprehension?\n \nIn this session\, Dr. Archer will review the major recommendations of the\nEducator’s Practice Guide released in 2022 by the Institute of Education Sciences. These recommendations include: building students’ decoding skills so they can read complex multi-syllabic words; providing purposeful fluency-building activities; and utilizing a number of research-validated comprehension practices. Dr. Archer will introduce each of the recommendations\, provide examples\, and model the effective practices.\n \n(afternoon session:) WORDS\, WORDS\, WORDS: Explicit Vocabulary Instruction\n\n \n\n\n\nWords are all we have for understanding new concepts\, building background knowledge\, expressing our ideas\, and understanding narrative and informative texts.  In this training\, Dr. Archer will expand your knowledge regarding selecting vocabulary terms for explicit instruction and effectively teaching General Academic and Domain Specific vocabulary.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nPam Kastner\, Ed.D.\n \n\n\n\nSpelling: Visible Language to Inform Instruction and Intervention \n\n\nThis session highlights the importance of spelling to literacy development and how it can be analyzed to inform instruction and intervention. The integration of phonology\, orthography\, and morphology will be utilized to analyze student spelling inventory results.  Participants will evaluate students’ spelling\, determine the type of error(s) students made and engage with tools and queries school teams can use to drive analysis and targeted instruction and intervention. Classroom and individual results from a spelling inventory will guide participants in drawing conclusions for core\, small group\, and individual instruction to accelerate learning \n\n\n\n\nDr. Katsner has helped to lead Pennsylvania’s Dyslexia and Screening Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program and serves on the Pennsylvania Task force for Higher Education. She has presented at the National Summit on the Science of Reading in Higher Education\, is an adjunct professor at Mount Saint Joseph University teaching at the Masters’ and Doctoral levels\, and serves as the President of The Reading League Pennsylvania. She is on the Reading League Journal’s Practitioner Editorial Board and is a member of the Science of Reading: A Defining Movement coalition.\n\n\n \n \nRebecca Tolson\, Ph.D.\, CALT-QI\n \n\n\nDeveloping Metacognitive Strategies\n \n\n\n\nThe focus of this session is creating strategic thinkers. Strategic thinkers know the structure of the text they are reading\, connect ideas\, and constantly summarize and monitor understanding. If the text is not making sense\, the strategic thinker has a plan for repairing their comprehension. Participants will learn activities that promote strategic thinking skills.\n\nRebecca Tolson has a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Akron and is a member of Academic Therapy Association at the level of Qualified Instructor and Certified Academic Language Therapist and a Certified Dyslexia Therapist through the International Dyslexia Association. She specializes in using Structured Literacy techniques as intervention for dyslexia and dysgraphia.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \nCarolyn Turner\, M.Ed.\, Structured Literacy/Dyslexia Interventionist\n\n \nReady\, Set\, Go! Next Steps After Universal Screening\n \n\n\n\n\nEarly elementary is a time of rapid growth and development in foundational literacy skills. Ohio’s Dyslexia Committee recommends providing brief universal screening three times a year to prevent misidentifying students as at risk or not at risk for later reading difficulties. But screening is only the first step. This session will provide a practical application of a multi-tiered system of supports to help educators identify and meet the needs of students at risk for dyslexia and those with other reading concerns. Participants will leave with actionable steps for an immediate instructional response that includes screening\, diagnostic assessments\, appropriate interventions\, and progress monitoring to catch students before they fail.  \n \nCarolyn Turner\, M.Ed.\, is an educator and lifelong learner with 27 years of experience. She has served as an elementary school teacher\, regional school improvement consultant\, state regional literacy specialist\, adjunct professor\, dyslexia interventionist\, and national literacy consultant. Carolyn currently serves as one of Ohio’s two literacy leads. Along with her commitment to ensuring all students become skilled readers\, she is an advocate for reading science and has extensive knowledge of evidence-based approaches to teaching reading. Carolyn earned a B.S. in elementary education from Miami University\, an M.Ed. in leadership and administration from the University of Cincinnati\, and a Dyslexia Interventionist Certification from Mount St Joseph University. Carolyn works with local\, regional\, and state-level instructional leaders to build their capacity to implement evidence-based reading practices in their schools. She works to ensure that all involved have the appropriate knowledge\, skills\, and abilities to sustain change\, resulting in improved instruction and successful reading achievement for all children.  \n\n \n\n\n\n\n \nJanel Bowman\n \nDive into Decoding: Using Diagnostic Assessments to Identify Target Decoding Skills\n \n\n\n\n\nDecoding surveys are quick\, efficient diagnostic assessments that provide actionable data to inform instruction for whole and small-group reading skills. After identifying student strengths and weaknesses\, learn how to plan instruction aligned decoding needs. \n \nJanel Bowman is a doctoral student in the Mount St. Joseph’s Science of Reading doctoral program. She has been in education for 25 years and works as an intervention coach in Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools. She supports intervention specialists in making data-based decisions and implementing research interventions for students with individual education plans. Additionally\, she is an Orton-Gillingham master teacher connected to the Hamilton County ESC (formerly Mayerson Academy). She trains Gahanna intervention specialists in structured literacy with an in-district supervised practicum. \n \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Why Some Students Struggle with Math and What We Can Do About It with Marilyn Zecher (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to Swift School in Roswell\, GA for hosting this free community outreach event.  \nREGISTER HERE (no cost): https://www.theswiftschool.org/programs/mar21swiftinstitute  \nThis presentation by Ms. Marilyn Zecher\, M.A.\, CALT\, (via Zoom) will offer some ideas about why some students struggle with mathematics from a diagnostic perspective. We will define and examine the core deficit in mathematics before we examine typical concepts in math which prove challenging for many students but particularly for those with language-based learning disabilities. Language difficulties such as dyslexia can have a profound impact on learning math. We also will look at some evidence-based recommendations from national sources which help us craft viable instructional strategies and avoid student math anxiety. Finally\, we will introduce supports – both input and output accommodations – which help students succeed.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Building Students’ Word Knowledge…with Elizabeth Stevens (#4 in Spotlight Series)
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://Spotlight2023March29.eventbrite.com \nDESCRIPTION – Wednesday\, March 29\, 2023 (#4 in the Series) \nBuilding Students’ Word Knowledge: How to Teach Essential Words \nAttendees will learn the importance of providing vocabulary instruction across content areas (i.e.\, English language arts/reading\, social studies\, science\, mathematics) and the role of word knowledge for students’ reading comprehension. First\, the presenter will describe guidelines for vocabulary instruction\, including how to choose which words to teach. Next\, the presenter will describe the steps in a routine for teaching essential words\, provide sample vocabulary maps for various content areas\, and model instruction. Third\, the presenter will provide suggestions for planning vocabulary instruction and share resources teachers can use in their classroom. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A period. \nElizabeth Stevens\, Ph.D.\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Learning Sciences at Georgia State University. Stevens completed her doctoral degree at The University of Texas at Austin. She holds a master’s degree in special education from the College of William and Mary and a reading specialist degree from the University of Virginia. Prior to pursuing her doctorate\, she taught special education for nine years in Virginia. Elizabeth has coordinated large-scale research projects at The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. She recently served as Co-Principal Investigator of an IES-funded Development and Innovation Project\, Middle School Matters\, which focused on developing a PD model to support middle school teachers with implementing research-based practices during content-area reading instruction. Elizabeth researches effective reading and mathematics interventions for students with learning disabilities and learning difficulties. She is particularly interested in the effects of aligning Tier 1 (core) instruction with Tier 2 intervention for upper elementary students with reading comprehension difficulties. She is also interested in the effects of vocabulary instruction on the word-problem performance of upper elementary students with mathematics difficulty. She has extensive experience in designing literacy interventions for diverse and at-risk populations\, providing PD to districts\, and examining the effects of such interventions and PD through high quality research studies. Stevens has published in numerous journals including Scientific Studies of Reading\, Exceptional Children\, Journal of Learning Disabilities\, Reading and Writing\, Remedial and Special Education\, and Teaching Exceptional Children.
