SUMMARY:Webinar: Launching Successful Readers in Kindergarten and First Grade
DESCRIPTION:Launching Successful Readers in Kindergarten and First Grade\nPresented by Dr. Susan Brady \nThe importance of phoneme awareness and other foundation skills for beginning readers is well documented.  Yet\, unfortunately\, there are widespread misunderstandings about how phoneme awareness skills develop and about how they should be taught.  In this session\, the misunderstandings will be evaluated\, drawing on research findings that clarify how phoneme awareness actually develops and that provide guidelines for effective teaching of phoneme awareness and other foundation skills both to beginners and to older struggling readers. \nQuestions and discussion will follow. \nAbout the Presenter \nSusan Brady received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Connecticut in 1975. She presently is a Professor Emerita at the University of Rhode Island where she was a faculty member in the Psychology Department for 35 years. She held additional positions at the University of Sussex\, St. Andrews University\, and Haskins Laboratories. Concentrating on topics in the field of literacy\, her research has focused on language factors in reading development and in reading difficulties: in 2009\, she was the recipient of the Samuel T. Orton Award\, IDA’s Research Award. In addition\, Dr. Brady has been committed to translating the implications of the large body of reading research for practice and has conducted multiple grant-funded professional development projects.  She has served on the Board of Directors for the International Dyslexia Association and for Haskins Laboratories.  She recently was invited to be a member of the Evidence Advisory Panel for the newly formed Evidence Advocacy Center\, the goal of which is to establish evidence as the basis of a professional education system.

SUMMARY:Summer Conversation #1 – OGA Fellows Janet Street and Natalie Felix chat about Demystifying the Written Language
DESCRIPTION:Kick back\, relax\, and enjoy the first of our Summer Conversation Series. 6:00-6:45 pm. We are giving these two logophiles an additional 15 minutes. 🙂\nRegister HERE.  \n \n\nIt’s TIME for our first summer chat! This Wednesday join Jovial Janet Street and her guest\, the delightful Novaturient* Natalie Felix\, for “Unlocking the Fun of Word Study.” This will be a fun and enlightening conversation on how the exploration of the written language can demystify the complexities of reading and writing for all learners. Together\, these logophiles will delve into the joy and intricacies of words\, their meanings and origins\, and their powerful impact. Get ready for an engaging chat filled with laughter\, learning\, and linguistic discoveries.\n\n*The term ‘novaturient’ refers to those who yearn for change and new experiences—a trait indicative of a positive outlook on growth and evolution. After witnessing her son’s educational hurdles\, Natalie knew change was necessary\, and she was determined to be a part of that change. She sought Orton-Gillingham training\, and her dedication evolved from classroom teacher and tutor to teacher trainer. As an Orton-Gillingham Fellow\, she now seeks to empower novaturient educators with a deeper understanding of the science of reading and Structured Literacy teaching methods. Novaturient Natalie is inspiring a new generation of teachers to make reading and writing a source of joy\, not frustration. \nWant to explore more about the word novaturient? https://ga.dyslexiaida.org/exploring-interesting-words/ \n\nNatalie Felix is the owner of Structured Language & Literacy\, LLC\, a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist/CERI\, and a Fellow of The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners & Educators. She holds a Masters Degree in Special Education from Valdosta State University. Currently\, she serves as Fellow at Swift School in Roswell\, GA\, and Sage School in Lawrenceville\, GA\, providing Orton-Gillingham training and support to faculty as well as members of the community. Natalie’s focus is to provide Orton-Gillingham training to both public and private school educators in an effort to give teachers the tools to deliver sound Tier 1 reading instruction as well as intervention to struggling readers. She also enjoys the rewarding experience of tutoring with one-on-one students. Natalie is the mother of two grown children and resides in Alpharetta\, GA\, with her husband\, Mark\, of over 30 years. \nJanet Street\, M.Ed.\, serves on the board of the Georgia Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. Janet has worked with dyslexic learners for 23 years. She held many positions at The Schenck School & ReadSource\, including Lead Teacher\, Director of Student Services\, Director of Outplacement\, and Director of Teacher Training.  She is a Fellow with the Orton-Gillingham Academy and has taught hundreds of teachers how to use the Orton-Gillingham Approach to help students learn to read and spell.  Janet is currently the Founder and CEO of Smart Street which offers Orton-Gillingham training and educational consulting services.  She is the proud daughter\, sister\, and mother of talented and successful family members with dyslexia.
