DESCRIPTION:Register: https://Spotlight2023March29.eventbrite.com \nDESCRIPTION – Wednesday\, March 29\, 2023 (#4 in the Series) \nBuilding Students’ Word Knowledge: How to Teach Essential Words \nAttendees will learn the importance of providing vocabulary instruction across content areas (i.e.\, English language arts/reading\, social studies\, science\, mathematics) and the role of word knowledge for students’ reading comprehension. First\, the presenter will describe guidelines for vocabulary instruction\, including how to choose which words to teach. Next\, the presenter will describe the steps in a routine for teaching essential words\, provide sample vocabulary maps for various content areas\, and model instruction. Third\, the presenter will provide suggestions for planning vocabulary instruction and share resources teachers can use in their classroom. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A period. \nElizabeth Stevens\, Ph.D.\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Learning Sciences at Georgia State University. Stevens completed her doctoral degree at The University of Texas at Austin. She holds a master’s degree in special education from the College of William and Mary and a reading specialist degree from the University of Virginia. Prior to pursuing her doctorate\, she taught special education for nine years in Virginia. Elizabeth has coordinated large-scale research projects at The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. She recently served as Co-Principal Investigator of an IES-funded Development and Innovation Project\, Middle School Matters\, which focused on developing a PD model to support middle school teachers with implementing research-based practices during content-area reading instruction. Elizabeth researches effective reading and mathematics interventions for students with learning disabilities and learning difficulties. She is particularly interested in the effects of aligning Tier 1 (core) instruction with Tier 2 intervention for upper elementary students with reading comprehension difficulties. She is also interested in the effects of vocabulary instruction on the word-problem performance of upper elementary students with mathematics difficulty. She has extensive experience in designing literacy interventions for diverse and at-risk populations\, providing PD to districts\, and examining the effects of such interventions and PD through high quality research studies. SUMMARY:The Right to Read Film and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:No cost. Reserve your spot HERE. \nUnlike language\, most children do not “naturally” learn to read\, where they pick it up simply by being around it. Evidence shows the majority of children require explicit instruction in how to learn to read. Surrounding a child with books is not enough to instill a love of literature; first\, they must learn how to decode individual words by recognizing sounds\, letters\, and how they blend. But they cannot learn this alone\, a teacher must instruct them systematically in a classroom. \nHosted by: International Dyslexia Association Georgia\, Cox Campus\, Reading is Essential for All People\, Cobb Dyslexia Network\, Cobb County District 2 Commission\, Rollins Center for Language and Learning\, The Reading League Georgia\, SPLC\, and Decoding Dyslexia Georgia. \n  \nMarietta Performing Arts Center \n1171 Whitlock Avenue Northwest\nMarietta\, GA 30064 \nNo cost. SUMMARY:Webinar: Working Memory with Dr. Mary Alt & Dr Shelley Gray!
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nWebinar registration is FULL! If you would like to be added to a waitlist\, please email info@arizonaida.org.  \nThis is a two-part webinar (two 90-minute sessions).  \nWorking memory is the retention of a small amount of information in a readily accessible form. It facilitates planning\, comprehension\, reasoning\, and problem-solving (Cowan\, 2017). Working memory is essential to carrying out multistep activities\, completing mental manipulations\, and following complex instructions. During the first session on May 6th\, participants will learn about working memory\, how it relates to education\, and how to notice its influence in their home or classroom.  \nAt the end of Session 1\,  participants will be able to: \n\nExplain what working memory is to another person who did not attend the session.\nAnalyze different settings/situations to see how working memory might be involved.\n\nAttendees will be given interactive and practical applications to implement between sessions and review during the May 20th session.*  \nWe will resume at 9 am on May 20th to discuss strategies to support working memory and examine participants’ own lesson plans to identify the ones that support or do not support working memory. This will be an interactive session with small groups to allow participants to highlight techniques they are using that support working memory OR add in additional support. \nAt the end of Session 2\, participants will be able to: \n\nCompare and contrast lesson plans and determine which plans support working memory and describe how it is supported.\nDiscover ways in which they are already supporting working memory in their lesson plans or envision new ways to support it. \n\nNote: We recognize that parents may attend\, so ‘lesson plans’ might be plans for a child to complete a task at home\, academic or not.  \nThis webinar is free to attend.  \nProfessional Development: Three Continuing Education Units/Professional Development Hours (CEUs/PDHs) will be offered to educators and SLPs/SLPAs working on their certificate renewal. Participants must attend both live sessions.  \n*SLPs/SLPAs – This webinar is NOT a pre-approved ASHA CEU course\, but can be used towards your 30 PDH requirement. Please reach out to Heather.Caska@ArizonaIDA.org with any questions. \nCertificate Cost:  IDA Members $0/Non-members $5  \nCEU certificates will be issued to those that submit the CEU – Webinar Reflection Form and make payment. Form and payment links will be sent after session 2.  Certificates will be emailed by June 17th\, 2023. \nAbout the Presenters: \nMary Alt is a Professor and the Department Head for the Department of Speech\, Language\, and Hearing Science in the College Science at the University of Arizona. She is a certified speech-language pathologist who has practiced in the public schools and private practice. She leads the L4Lab:Language\, Learning\, Literacy\, Lexicon.  The L4 lab is focused on learning how these four topics interact in making us effective communicators and understanding what happens when these important skills do not develop or break down.  Our lab is also interested in discovering interventions and solutions to learning challenges. Dr. Alt\, the L4Lab\, and their partners are currently studying the development of working memory in elementary-aged children with and without language learning impairments and exploring which treatment parameters lead to the best word learning outcomes for late-talking toddlers.  \nShelley Gray is a Professor of Speech and Hearing Science in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University and a certified speech-language pathologist. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and a Barrett Honors Faculty member. She leads the Child Language and Literacy Lab (CHILLL) that focuses on the development of early literacy\, reading\, and working memory in children and adolescents and the development and testing of assessments and curricula to improve children’s learning and academic success. In collaboration with many talented colleagues\, CHILLL has ongoing studies investigating the development and testing of the Teaching Early Literacy and Language (TELL) preschool curriculum\, testing of the Comprehensive Assessment Battery for Children – Working Memory (CABC-WM)\, and longitudinal studies of reading and working memory in elementary through high school students. \nIDA Arizona Moderator: Heather Caska

SUMMARY:DDIG – “Executive Function: Supporting Our Learners in the Classroom and Beyond”
DESCRIPTION:DDIG – “Above and Beyond Intervention: Independence Through Executive Function”\n\n\nMonday\, May 8\, 2023\n7:00 – 8:30 pm CST\n \n\nJoin Erin Luchterhand B.S\, Jennifer Onoyeyan M.A.\, Thea Slingland M.A \, and Tiffany Wells B.S.\, as we dive deeper into executive functioning challenges. The value of strategic intervention for those with learning challenges is indisputable. However\, as  classroom teachers and parents across the country have seen\, students often leave a season of  intervention still struggling to generalize and utilize the skills learned into new settings. Executive  Functioning\, the CEO of the brain\, is the key to helping students apply the hard work achieved long after directed intervention. By embedding Executive Functioning skills throughout intervention\, we aid our students in developing awareness of strategies to grow their independence\, both academically and in life.\n \n\n\n\nTickets go on sale April 24.\n \nRegister for the May 9th DDIG Meeting\n\n\n\n\n \nStudents in high school and college are encouraged to attend.\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n \n1.5 CEUs can be obtained by purchasing the CEU ticket.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: What on Earth Is Going On with This Child?! The Evaluation of the Child with Reading Challenges.
DESCRIPTION:What on Earth Is Going On with This Child?! The Evaluation of the Child with Reading Challenges.  \nHow often have you had a student who is receiving appropriate intervention\, but there is limited improvement in their educational challenges? During this presentation Dr. Tridas will discuss the process of the diagnostic evaluation of the child with dyslexia and related disorders and review an approach to assess the whole child. During this session\, the participants will learn the salient factors in the student’s history\, the types of tests that are used to measure these problems and how to evaluate for frequent coexisting conditions. Dr. Tridas will describe an evaluation approach that facilitates the integration of all of the findings into a practical formulation that can help guide the student’s intervention and accommodation plan.   \n\nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Tridas practiced developmental and behavioral pediatrics in the Tampa Bay Area for 37 years. He is an IDA representative to the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities\, a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Learning Disability Association of America\, and Past President of the International Dyslexia Association. Dr. Tridas is the recipient of the 2017 International Dyslexia Association Margaret Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2012 IMSLEC Innovator Award.  He lectures and consults nationally and internationally on dyslexia and other behavioral and developmental pediatrics topics.
