We will define and examine the core deficit in mathematics before we examine typical concepts in math which prove challenging for many students but particularly for those with language-based learning disabilities. Language difficulties such as dyslexia can have a profound impact on learning math. We also will look at some evidence-based recommendations from national sources which help us craft viable instructional strategies and avoid student math anxiety. Classroom and individual results from a spelling inventory will guide participants in drawing conclusions for core\, small group\, and individual instruction to accelerate learning \n\n\n\n\nDr. Katsner has helped to lead Pennsylvania’s Dyslexia and Screening Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program and serves on the Pennsylvania Task force for Higher Education. Participants will learn activities that promote strategic thinking skills.\n\nRebecca Tolson has a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Akron and is a member of Academic Therapy Association at the level of Qualified Instructor and Certified Academic Language Therapist and a Certified Dyslexia Therapist through the International Dyslexia Association. She specializes in using Structured Literacy techniques as intervention for dyslexia and dysgraphia.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \nCarolyn Turner\, M.Ed.\, Structured Literacy/Dyslexia Interventionist\n\n \nReady\, Set\, Go! Next Steps After Universal Screening\n \n\n\n\n\nEarly elementary is a time of rapid growth and development in foundational literacy skills. Ohio’s Dyslexia Committee recommends providing brief universal screening three times a year to prevent misidentifying students as at risk or not at risk for later reading difficulties. But screening is only the first step. This session will provide a practical application of a multi-tiered system of supports to help educators identify and meet the needs of students at risk for dyslexia and those with other reading concerns. Participants will leave with actionable steps for an immediate instructional response that includes screening\, diagnostic assessments\, appropriate interventions\, and progress monitoring to catch students before they fail.  \n \nCarolyn Turner\, M.Ed.\, is an educator and lifelong learner with 27 years of experience. She has served as an elementary school teacher\, regional school improvement consultant\, state regional literacy specialist\, adjunct professor\, dyslexia interventionist\, and national literacy consultant. Carolyn currently serves as one of Ohio’s two literacy leads. Along with her commitment to ensuring all students become skilled readers\, she is an advocate for reading science and has extensive knowledge of evidence-based approaches to teaching reading. Carolyn earned a B.S. in elementary education from Miami University\, an M.Ed. in leadership and administration from the University of Cincinnati\, and a Dyslexia Interventionist Certification from Mount St Joseph University. Carolyn works with local\, regional\, and state-level instructional leaders to build their capacity to implement evidence-based reading practices in their schools. She has been in education for 25 years and works as an intervention coach in Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools. This evidence-based and proven instructional methodology enables students to master the skills that are essential if they are to become competent writers. Those skills equip students to become better readers\, to communicate more effectively in writing and speaking\, and most importantly\, to elevate their thinking. The Hochman Method will be discussed in relation to the challenges of writing: the cognitive demands of writing\, the interplay of writing with reading comprehension and knowledge\, the scaffolding of writing instruction\, and the importance of planning and revising. Participants will learn key strategies that can be implemented immediately with students in writing or through oral practice. \nDr. Vroom and Dr. Zoleo are the co-executive directors of The Writing Revolution (TWR). TWR is a national nonprofit that trains educators and supports schools and districts in implementing the Hochman Method\, an evidence-based method of writing instruction that transforms the way students write\, learn\, read\, think\, and express themselves. Dr. Vroom was previously a lead social studies teacher and school-wide writing coordinator at New Dorp High School. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jason Yeatman is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Stanford University. In this talk he will first lay out the neurobiological underpinnings of literacy and ask the question: “Why do some children struggle learning to read?” Then\, Dr. Yeatman will present data showing how intensive reading intervention programs can reshape development of the brain’s reading circuitry.
