Some were identified late in life and in learning environments\, they were labeled as disruptive\, lazy\, unmotivated\, or told they just needed to try harder. The psychological implications of negative learning environments are well documented\, and the impact of being misidentified affects an individual’s ability and motivation to learn. This session will delve into research on the emotional repercussions of being undiagnosed. Personal stories of adults with dyslexia will be shared. Finally\, learn how to help these individuals by exploring best practices for instruction as well as technology to support their access to age-appropriate content. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nAttendees will understand the impact trauma has on memory and learning.\nAttendees will learn best practices for teaching students with trauma how to read.\n\nAudience Level: \n\nBeginner\n\nWho Should Attend: \n\nPre-Service\, Early Childhood\, Elementary\, Secondary\, and Post-Secondary Educators\nParents and Adults\n\nProfessional Development: \nOne Continuing Education (CE)  hour will be offered to educators working on their certificate renewal. Participants must attend the live webinar. CEU certificates will be issued to those who submit the CEU – Webinar Reflection Form and make payment. Certificates will be emailed by November 1\, 2024. Cost:  IDA Members $0/Non-members $5   \nAbout the Speakers: \nNanci Shepardson is the Director of Accessibility and Assistive Technology Solutions at Wilson Language Training. She is a Reading and Educational Specialist with an M.S.Ed. in Language and Literacy and an Ed.S. in Assistive Technology. She is a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner and holds a CPACC credential. \nShe is a seasoned teacher and a credentialed K-12 Reading Specialist. She is a published author\, an advocate for students with disabilities and their families\, and is also a professional speaker on dyslexia\, language-based disabilities\, executive functioning\, and assistive technology throughout the country. \nEquity and access for all\, especially regarding access to research-based reading instruction and assistive technology services\, are at the forefront of her work. \nSusie Shepardson has her PhD in Cognition and Development Research from Emory University. Her research focuses on the impact of extrinsic and intrinsic emotion on memory: how does negative and positive information enhance memory and slow the rate of forgetting relative to neutral information.
