SUMMARY:Summer Conversation #1 – OGA Fellows Janet Street and Natalie Felix chat about Demystifying the Written Language
DESCRIPTION:Kick back\, relax\, and enjoy the first of our Summer Conversation Series. 6:00-6:45 pm. We are giving these two logophiles an additional 15 minutes. 🙂\nRegister HERE.  \n \n\nIt’s TIME for our first summer chat! This Wednesday join Jovial Janet Street and her guest\, the delightful Novaturient* Natalie Felix\, for “Unlocking the Fun of Word Study.” This will be a fun and enlightening conversation on how the exploration of the written language can demystify the complexities of reading and writing for all learners. Together\, these logophiles will delve into the joy and intricacies of words\, their meanings and origins\, and their powerful impact. Get ready for an engaging chat filled with laughter\, learning\, and linguistic discoveries.\n\n*The term ‘novaturient’ refers to those who yearn for change and new experiences—a trait indicative of a positive outlook on growth and evolution. After witnessing her son’s educational hurdles\, Natalie knew change was necessary\, and she was determined to be a part of that change. She sought Orton-Gillingham training\, and her dedication evolved from classroom teacher and tutor to teacher trainer. As an Orton-Gillingham Fellow\, she now seeks to empower novaturient educators with a deeper understanding of the science of reading and Structured Literacy teaching methods. Novaturient Natalie is inspiring a new generation of teachers to make reading and writing a source of joy\, not frustration. \nWant to explore more about the word novaturient? https://ga.dyslexiaida.org/exploring-interesting-words/ \n\nNatalie Felix is the owner of Structured Language & Literacy\, LLC\, a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist/CERI\, and a Fellow of The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners & Educators. She holds a Masters Degree in Special Education from Valdosta State University. Currently\, she serves as Fellow at Swift School in Roswell\, GA\, and Sage School in Lawrenceville\, GA\, providing Orton-Gillingham training and support to faculty as well as members of the community. Natalie’s focus is to provide Orton-Gillingham training to both public and private school educators in an effort to give teachers the tools to deliver sound Tier 1 reading instruction as well as intervention to struggling readers. She also enjoys the rewarding experience of tutoring with one-on-one students. Natalie is the mother of two grown children and resides in Alpharetta\, GA\, with her husband\, Mark\, of over 30 years. \nJanet Street\, M.Ed.\, serves on the board of the Georgia Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. Janet has worked with dyslexic learners for 23 years. She held many positions at The Schenck School & ReadSource\, including Lead Teacher\, Director of Student Services\, Director of Outplacement\, and Director of Teacher Training.  She is a Fellow with the Orton-Gillingham Academy and has taught hundreds of teachers how to use the Orton-Gillingham Approach to help students learn to read and spell.  Janet is currently the Founder and CEO of Smart Street which offers Orton-Gillingham training and educational consulting services.  She is the proud daughter\, sister\, and mother of talented and successful family members with dyslexia.

Reading comprehension Executive Functions play an important role in reading comprehension. How can we support students who are impacted by poor EF skills?   There are multiple technological tools that will scaffold and support reading comprehension and EF skills. The goal of this presentation is to equip participants through hands-on exploration on how technological tools can support and remediate reading comprehension skills that blend with executive function skills. \nParticipants will examine websites that provide scaffolds for the comprehension process that can be used with students immediately. These include sites that scaffold morphology skills\, decoding skills\, and vocabulary concepts.  Participants will leave with a hyperlinked document\, a Padlet that will provide live links to the tools shared during the presentation. \nThis session is geared towards teachers\, tutors\, parents\, and middle and high school\, and college students. A virtual follow-up session will be held on October 2\, 2024. Participants should upload any questions regarding the technology shared to the Padlet before September 23\, 2024. \n\nFollow Up Session:\nYou spent the day together on September 14th. Now\, it’s time for you to go out and try the new tools you explored. Keep track of what works and what poses challenges. You’ll then come together virtually for an hour on October 2nd to share success stories and address roadblocks. Using the interactive posting tool from September 14th\, Nanci will gather your questions and comments\, focusing on the most popular inquiries during this follow-up session.\nThe Zoom link for this session will be sent to your registration email address on September 30th. \nRegister Now! \nRegistration:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket Type\nWhole Day Price\nPer Session Price\n Member Discount (20% off)\nUse Promo Code IDAMember424 at checkout\n\n\nProfessional (CEUs)\n$95\n$60\nYes\n\n\nParent (No CEUs)\n$60\n$35\nYes\n\n\nCollege Student\n$25\nN/A\nN/A\n\n\nHigh School Student\n$15\nN/A\nN/A\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now!\nRegistration Terms:\nRegistrations cannot be transferred.\nCancellations prior to September 1st will result in a $15 processing fee.\nCancellations after September 1st will result in a $15 or 50% processing fee\, whichever is greater. \nDoors will open for sign in at 8:15am\nLunch will not be provided.
