By Claire Mullins, IDA Advocacy Coordinator
Members of the IDA board including current president, Eric Tridas, M.D., and past president, Guinevere Eden, Ph.D., along with several volunteers and IDA staff members, were pleased to attend the U.S. Congressional caucus on dyslexia kickoff reception hosted by Rep. Bill Cassidy and Rep. Pete Stark on Tuesday, May 8. The event, held in Washington, D.C., included a screening of “The D Word,” a documentary film about dyslexia by James Redford. Also in attendance were Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz, leading authorities on dyslexia, Rep. Henry Waxman, many of the families appearing in the film, and other members of the general public with an interest in dyslexia.
The caucus was formed to raise awareness of dyslexia and the impact it has on families as well as communities across the nation. The caucus co-sponsors, Reps. Cassidy and Stark, both have family members with dyslexia. We thank these two gentlemen for their work in bringing attention to the issue.
