Dyslexia & Literacy Instruction: Phonology

Presenters

  • Alicia Roberts Frank

Description

This workshop can stand alone or be combined with others in the series on Structured Literacy Instruction (SLI) for students with Dyslexia.  Phonology is the study of sound structure of spoken words and is a critical element of Structured Literacy instruction. Phonological awareness includes rhyming, counting words in spoken sentence, and clapping syllables in spoken words. An important aspect of phonological awareness is phonemic awareness or the ability to segment words into their component sounds, which are called phonemes. A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a given language that can be recognized as being distinct from other sounds in the language.

In this full-day workshop, participants will learn about the critical role of phonological awareness in building proficient readers.  They will gain an understanding of the difference between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness and phonics, as well as the effect of dyslexia on students phonological awareness and phonemic awareness skills.  Participants will have hands-on opportunities to explore the sounds of the English language and activities that measure and strengthen students’ phonological and phonemic awareness.
