Diana KIng InterviewVideo Tribute to Dr. Diana King, IDA Pioneer and Living Legend Dr. Diana King began her career as a teacher in Southern Rhodesia where she fell in love with teaching and language.  Diana spoke Italian, German and French and taught Latin, as well. She discovered that combining her passion for teaching with her passion for language still did not allow her to successfully teach some obviously bright and motivated students. Fortunately, for those of us touched by her dedication to teaching each child, Diana found herself teaching at the Sidwell Friends School where she learned about the Orton-Gillingham approach. Although her mentor at the time, Helene Durbrow, guided Diana’s mastery of the multisensory, sequential program, Diana also received guided instruction from Anna Gillingham, herself. It was Helene Durbrow who brought Diana to her first Orton Society meeting. Diana holds the record for IDA membership, having first joined in 1951! Read more and watch the interview.

Sylvia Richardson Interview ScreenshotTribute to IDA Pioneer: Sylvia Richardson Dr. Sylvia Onesti Richardson, the eighth President of the Orton Dyslexia Society, now known as the International Dyslexia Association, was described by Rosemary Bowler upon her presentation of the Samuel T. Orton Award in 1992 to Sylvia as “perhaps the most articulate, traveled, and acclaimed spokesperson for dyslexia in the nation.” Sylvia’s involvement with the education, speech-language and medical communities helped to cross-fertilize the cutting-edge research with which she and other members of the Society were engaged, thus helping to disseminate this critical information. She has written and helped to write over 100 publications and has received honors and awards from a number of organizations. Having been active in so many organizations supporting learning disabilities, why has the Orton Society, now the International Dyslexia Association, been so fortunate to have secured Dr. Richardson’s devotion to its mission? In this video Karen Dakin, Editor of The Examiner, and Secretary of IDA, interviews Dr. Richardson who explains why she found her home with the IDA and, with her usual wit and intelligence, so much more about her remarkable career. In this exclusive interview, Steven Spielberg discusses his dyslexia for the first time ever, with Quinn Bradlee of Friends of Quinn.  “When I felt like an outsider, movies made me feel inside my own skill set.”  Remarkably, the world famous director of E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Schindler’s List, The Color Purple, and Raiders of the Lost Ark was diagnosed with dyslexia only a few years ago. While he wishes that there had been more awareness of LDs in the 50s, he acknowledges the impact of his supportive parents who helped him endlessly with his studies, making sure he did add well as he possibly could in school

Dr. KauffmanDr. Kaufman Speaks on the Science of Reading and the Brain

How an individual achieves knowledge is largely through reading.  Almost every person knows at least one person who struggles with some aspect of reading mastery. Science has unlocked many of the mysteries and complex functions of the reading brain. Strides in brain research can now explain potential causes of reading difficulties including the most commonly misunderstood of all, dyslexia, and can relieve fears and uncertainties about how to provide relevant and effective reading instructional practices. Social media coupled with science can help unite our understanding of the reading brain. Reading Matters to Maine has posted an excellent video presentation by Christopher Kaufman, Ph.D., A Conversation about the Reading and the Brain.  Click Here to watch a 5 minute highlight video or the full 90 minute presentation.
